Cognizant is a self-organized task force of more than 400 volunteers in Nairn, Scotland, whose goal was to find a way to mobilize volunteer support and relief during the Covid-19 pandemic. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Ontario, EdTech organisation Ink Smith launched The Canadian Shield to address the shortage of PPE. The company quickly grew to meet demand, developing a face shield that could be produced and manufactured at scale, using existing resources and capabilities. The company now employs over 300 people and produces 200,000 shields a day, not only helping to solve the PPE shortage problem, but reinvigorating the local manufacturing sector with full-time, living wage jobs.
